How the calculator splits your trip

It runs the same code as the Tripyy app's own ledger. All amounts are handled in whole paise, never rounded rupees, so nothing goes missing.

1. Each bill is split into shares.
   • Equally: the bill divided by the number of people on it, rounded down to the paisa. The paise left over go one at a time, in the order you listed people. A ₹100.01 bill for 3 comes out ₹33.34, ₹33.34 and ₹33.33.
   • By shares: each person gets the bill times their shares, divided by all the shares, rounded down. The leftover paise go to whoever lost the most in rounding.
   • Exact amounts: what you type, and it has to add up to the bill. Until it does, the bill shows how much is left to assign or how much it's over.
   The shares always add up to the bill exactly. If they ever didn't, the calculator would show no result rather than a wrong one.
2. Each person gets a balance: what they paid, plus what they put into the pot, minus their shares. Plus means they get money back, minus means they owe.
3. Who pays whom. The people who owe are lined up largest first, and so are the people owed. The top of each list is matched for the smaller of the two amounts, then the next, until everyone is at zero. That makes at most one payment fewer than the number of people with a balance.

An honest limit: this matching is a quick, greedy method. It usually gives few payments, but not always the fewest possible.

Worked example

An example with made-up people: Asha, Bina, Chirag and Dev, a weekend in Goa, six bills. The figures below were worked out by the calculator itself.

One person held the money? Use pot mode

On a lot of trips one friend collects money up front and pays for the villa and the cabs out of it. Tick "One person held a pot", pick who held it, enter what each person put in, and set those bills as paid "From the pot".

Then every payment goes to or from the holder: one per person with a balance. Nobody ends up paying a friend they didn't share a bill with. The holder gets one last line, keep this much or put in this much, after which the pot is at ₹0.

How to calculate trip cost per person

If everyone was on every bill and split it equally, it's simple: add up all the bills and divide by the number of people. Each person's cost is that figure, and what they owe or get back is what they paid minus that.

It stops being simple when someone skipped a dinner, left a day early or brought a partner. Then each bill needs its own list of people, and each person's cost is the sum of their shares across the bills they were on. That's what the calculator does, bill by bill.

Kids, couples and people who skipped a bill

• Someone wasn't there: untick them on that bill. They pay nothing towards it.
• A couple paying as one: give one of them 2 shares, or keep both as people with 1 share each.
• A kid, or someone who ate less: choose "Shares" and tap ×1 next to their name to cycle through ½, 1, 2 and 3 shares.
• Someone ordered the expensive thing: use exact amounts for that bill.
• A per-person price (tickets, scooters, entry fees): set the amount to "Each" and the bill's total is that amount times the people on it.

Settle up over UPI

Add a person's UPI id and every payment to them gets a pay link and a QR code with the exact amount filled in. They're built by the same code that makes the payment requests inside the Tripyy app.

• We only check that a UPI id looks like one (name@bank). We can't check that it exists or whose it is, so check the name your UPI app shows before you pay.
• The payment happens in the payer's own UPI app. Tripyy never touches the money.
• The pay link opens a UPI app on a phone. On a computer, scan the QR with your phone instead.

Calculator or Excel sheet?

A spreadsheet is fine when everyone is on every bill and splits equally: one column of amounts, one sum, one division. It gets fiddly when a bill leaves someone out, when shares aren't equal, and when rounding leaves a paisa or two unaccounted for. The hardest part, turning balances into a short list of who pays whom, is the part a sheet doesn't do for you.

This page is for adding it all up at the end. Tripyy is for doing it as you go: the trip gets its own group chat, anyone types a spend like a message ("cab 1200, sab ke liye"), and everyone sees the same balances. A pot, UPI settle-up and a shared photo gallery are built in.

Is it free?

Yes, with no sign-up. It takes up to 30 people and 150 bills.

Does it save or send what I type?

The sums run in your browser, and nothing is saved while you work: close the tab without sharing and it's gone. Two things leave the page, and only when you tap them. Sharing: Send on WhatsApp, Copy summary and Copy share link save the names, UPI ids, pot amounts and bills on Tripyy's server, so the link can open them. They are deleted 30 days after the link is made. No account, phone number or IP address is kept with them. "Read it": it sends the one line you typed and the names you entered to Tripyy's server, where an AI model reads it into a bill and sends the bill back. The line and the names are not saved or logged. The page counts visits with Cloudflare's cookieless analytics, which sees the page address, not what you type. More on the privacy page.

How does "Type a bill like a message" work?

Write it the way you'd say it in the group, in English or Hinglish: "cab 1200 sab ke liye", "dinner 2400, everyone but Dev", "Bina paid 1800 for the villa deposit". AI turns it into the same bill form the Tripyy app uses, and nothing is added until you check it and tap "Add bill". Up to 20 AI reads a day each; adding bills by hand has no limit.

How does the share link work?

Each share button makes a short link, like tripyy.in/c/k3f9x2, and saves the names, UPI ids and bills behind it. Share the same trip again without changes and you get the same link. Anyone with the link can see those names and amounts, so share it only with the group. A link works for 30 days from when it was made, then the trip is deleted and the link opens an empty calculator. Changed something? Share again for a new link. Want it gone sooner? Email hello@tripyy.in with the link. Older long links, with the bills packed in after the # sign, still work and are never saved on our server.

Why does one person pay ₹0.01 more?

A bill that doesn't divide evenly leaves a paisa or two over. Those go one at a time to people in the order you listed them (or, with shares, to whoever lost the most in rounding), so the shares add up to the bill exactly.

Why these payments and not others?

The biggest debt is matched with the biggest credit first, and so on down. It's quick and usually gives few payments, but it doesn't promise the fewest possible. With a pot, everyone settles with the holder instead.

Can someone be left off a bill?

Yes. Untick them under "Split between" when you add the bill.
